Reprieve in Zion

This is the famous mile long Carmel Mountain Tunnel made in 1930's by the CCC.
This park was named by the Mormons "Zion" meaning a peaceful sanctuary. We have met a few polygamous from Colorado City. In fact, a few of the people we saw to day on Oprah looked like a man and his wives at Wal-mart yesterday morning.

Above is the beginning of the Sand Beach Trail. It wasn't exactly a pleasant trail---made of deep sand similar to that on the beach above the water level that is trodden and difficult to walk through---but we through ed it for 3.5 miles of 500 feet increase several times through the hike. Charlie is now believing this is the way of trails which makes it much easier on me.

This hike was through the Court of Patriarchs, comprised of Mt. Jacob, Issac and Abraham as well as Mt Sentinel.

Above is the checkerboard: it is an amazing array of sideway horizontal and vertical erosion and/or drainage that has occurred in the past.

Here we are at the Narrows. It was a short hike which would have been superb if it had been a little warmer.

This is just a little icy area below weeping rock.

The ice on the poles looks a little harrowing but it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. It wasn't warm but it wasn't really that cold either.

Now this looks really cold but it must be distorted.
